[ Edited ]

Can one build a lucrative IT career working at a small mom and pop type company or do you need to branch out to larger firms to earn higher wages?

Wages tend to be higher at larger companies, but be careful of some public traded companies.  Once the company is public, the shareholders will require annual salary planning to be performed by someone in finance.  When that occurs, expect annual raises that are closer to %1 than 8%.

large companies all the way. You have more resources and more people to interact with. In a smaller company, you could be left with too much responsiblity.

Dear aguilafan,

Lucrative? Probably not at a very small firm. Plus, the owners may not have the money, desire or need to invest in cutting edge technology. Big companies are willing to spend more for talent but they also outsource and "right size" more. A mid-size firm that is growing and has capable management might provide the right balance. You'll get more autonomy and an opportunity to grow.

Good luck.
