The development platform for Ubuntu phone apps is only available on Ubuntu right now. Plenty of people running other operating systems are interested in developing for the new Ubuntu for Phones. Does anyone one know if it might be possible to run a virtual image of Ubuntu and develop an app on it?

I don't see why not. Obviously if you develop any binaries (as opposed to interpreted Javascript, python, etc.) and want to/need to run them on a Ubuntu platform that isn't x86, you will have to figure out cross-compilation. But I suspect that most developers will be using x86 machines to develop on and ARM-based target phones, so that shouldn't be an issue.
So yeah, fire up Virtualbox or KVM, or heaven forbid, even VMware, build yourself a virtual Ubuntu setup, and program to your hearts' delight!

Thanks for the feedback. I've never worked with a virtual machine myself, it's probably time to start (maybe even with VMWare but probably not them).
